In a sensational twist, Seoul’s SPC Group’s Chairman, Huh Young In, has been slapped with an arrest warrant by the Seoul Central District Prosecutor’s Office, charged with violating labor union and labor relations adjustment laws. It’s alleged that the magnate ordered SPC representatives, including CEO Hwang Jae Bok, to dismantle the labor union of Paris Baguette, a bakery chain under his empire, receiving regular updates of union member withdrawals.

Hwang has been reportedly singing like a canary in cooperation with the prosecutor’s investigation after being detained and charged for his role in executing the boss’s orders.

The drama unfolded when the prosecution summoned Chairman Huh between the 18th and 21st of last month. But the bakery baron played hooky, claiming a crucial meeting with the CEO of an Italian coffee company on the 22nd as his reason for non-attendance.

When he finally graced the prosecutor’s office with his presence on the 25th, he cut and run after just one hour, citing chest pains. A dramatic exit saw him admitted to a major hospital in Seoul.

But the heat was on, as the prosecution was not deterred and issued another summons on the 1st. In response, Chairman Huh requested an investigation at his hospital, where he was conveniently admitted, thus avoiding the summons again. Eventually, the long arm of the law caught up with him, and he was arrested at the hospital on the 2nd.

Chairman Huh’s excuse for not submitting a medical certificate? A medical strike, he claimed, had caused a delay in the medical examination and the issuance of the certificate. He insisted that there was “absolutely no intention” to evade or delay the prosecutor’s investigation and that he intended to attend once he had achieved “absolute stability”.

Despite requesting an on-site investigation at the hospital, the prosecution wasn’t biting and rejected the request. But the plot thickens as the prosecution is now planning to investigate whether Chairman Huh was deeply involved in bribing prosecution investigators and leaking confidential investigation information.
